Unfiltered Scuttlebutt

This is a riveting account of the 2012 race – and zealots of both parties will find things to adore and detest about this “Double Down.” The first third is a frank analysis of the many disappointments and unforced errors in President Obama’s first term; the writers then soundly ding the Republicans for the Trump/Cain/Gingrich tumult of the “Clown Car” primaries which so wounded their eventual nominee. The writing is crisp and pleasantly erudite; I had to look up a lot of words! But it was enjoyable reading – I confess to being on the winning side last election night – and Halperin/Heilemann are at their unparalleled best at teasing the full saga out of all the principal players, even Romney himself. A must-read for political junkies.
